May 1st has been historically linked to international workers’ rights. It started, May 1 1886 when the U.S. Federation of Organized Trade and Labor Unions – which included immigrant workers from all over — ruled that an 8 hour work day, would be a full and legal work day. The ruling class refused, causing riots and the long and even deadly battle to win rights for workers. It wasn’t long before workers from all over the world began protesting and standing up for their rights. While we may think we have secured safe conditions, the promise of a minimum wage and overtime after a 40 hour work week for all working people, the truth is that we have much more work to do. The battle that began between the ruling class and the working class in 1886 is still smoldering today.

The Civil Rights Committee (CRC) of USW Local 3657 was revived late last year and has since been in the process of developing a mission and agenda for creating and maintaining a discrimination and harassment-free union and workplace. To those ends we are reaching out to all the members of USW Local 3657 tell you about the various projects we hope to promote and how to contact us should you at any time need information or assistance on civil rights matters.

WOS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S CONFERENCE REPORT
From Sue Romano–Local 3657 Delegate to the 2013 Women of Steel Conference and Former President of USW Local 3657.
Thank you to the Executive Board and Membership of Local 3657 for allowing me to represent our local at the 2013 WOS Conference; it is always an honor and a privilege.
The success of our Stuffed Purse collection drive was incredible, delegates turned out with hundreds of purses being donated for women who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy and other tragedies. It was an awesome experience to be a member of our local that inspired so many to participate in this hugely successful drive.
This was an amazing conference with over 800 registered delegates and guests from the countries of Nigeria, the UK, Mexico and others. The Conference was exciting from the beginning when the national anthems of both the United States & Canada were played, to the end when delegates joined together in singing Solidarity Forever.
