Fight Back Pittsburgh/USW Local 3657 Organizing Committee Monthly Report
November 2014

It’s been another busy month for Fight Back Pittsburgh. As the Children’s Museum continues to organize, we held an action on Free Day where we handed out literature and coffee and talked to the museum workers. We supported Pittsburgh Student Solidarity Coalition on November 19th in their “Students Not Customers” rally as a part of a global week of action focused on the student debt crisis and corporatization of the university system.

Rachel Nunes, our intern funded by the Berger Marks Foundation, as a part of her grant launched a “share.connect.rise.” Facebook group and we is preparing for a large women’s caucus meeting on November 30.

Additionally, we have been preparing for the arrival if the Honeywell Road Warriors on Dec. 4. We have been organizing a benefit show to raise funds to help our brothers and sisters locked out at Honeywell. And we have been organizing our December GMM where we will hear from workers at the children’s museum about their campaign as well as the Fight For Fifteen Workers who are going on strike on December 4th!

It’s been a month of planning and action and we are excited for our upcoming GMM!

Committee Report for November 2014

The Committee met this month and reports the following:

1. AFL-CIO Mass Incarceration Training – We’ve spoken with the lead staffer on this issue from the AFL-CIO Civil Rights Department and have been informed that a three-day train-the-trainer will be held in early December (dates t.b.a. later this week). The goal of the training is to organize labor/community presentations of these materials throughout the U.S. which deal with the role that organized labor must play in addressing the new Jim Crow that our current system of mass imprisonment of African Americans and Latinos represents. The CRC endorses Doug Ward and Guillermo Perez to attend the training on behalf of Local 3657 with the Local covering lost time and expenses.

2. EEOC Report – We briefly discussed the Local’s making an information request for the most recent EEOC report from the international this December.

3. LCLAA – Pittsburgh LCLAA will be holding a press conference with faith and community allies to endorse President Obama’s taking executive action to grant temporarily legal status and work authorization for millions of undocumented families. Also, the chapter will be organizing another celebration of Three King’s Day at the PFT Headquarters on January 10 will be request financial support from the Local at next month’s membership meeting.

4. AFL-CIO 2015 MLK Civil and Human Rights Conference Jan. 15-19 Atlanta, GA. The committee endorses Doug Ward and Rachel Serbin to attend the Conference on behalf of Local 3657.

5. PAW (Pride at Work) – Their first conference call was held November 18th 2014. USW, SEIU, PAW an UFCW was represented on the call. USW Joshua Rafsky was nominated as Treasurer for PA Chapter. Their discussions included Labor Equality index, Discrimination laws, Hate Crimes, becoming more co-active with labor federations, etc. The PA chapter has gotten support from Jack Shea, Rick Bloomingdale and Director Bobby Mac.

6. CRC was thrilled to welcome Elizabeth Laux from District 2 as the newest member of the committee.

The communications committee would like to make sure all of our members, including the ones in the field, are able to successfully watch the live stream of the meetings. However, a majority of our offices in the field have slow internet and some staff may have slower machines so if you find that you are having difficulty watching the meetings LIVE you will have the ability to watch the recording once the meeting is complete. Our local, so far has generated 42 letters on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Free Trade Agreement Action Call. We have around 200 members. I know more are in the building. Thank you to the members that have returned the letters and I certainly hope the rest of us get them in. On the TTP phone call Action reminding members to call their U.S. Representative on the Rapid Response hotline at 1-877-879-8951. Enter your zip code and you’ll be connected to your Representative. Follow the prompts. Once connected, tell the staff person who answers: Your name, where you’re from and that you want your representative to oppose Fast Track legislation.

The bylaws committee is continuing to meet and identify changes. To that end, we are preparing a survey that we would like to distribute to the membership. The survey is designed to help us determine what, if any, changes the membership would like to make to the local bylaws. We intend to complete the survey and circulate via email and in person before the Christmas shutdown.

Solidarity with Locked Out Steelworkers at Honeywell–Brown Bag and Benefit Show!

The members of USW Local 7-669 at Honeywell’s uranium conversion facility in Metropolis, Illinois have been locked out of their jobs since August 1. The company is demanding that workers agree to changes in their contract that would allow management to operate large portions of the facility with contractors, eliminating as many as 100 local family-sustaining jobs.

Workers are concerned that allowing outside contractors to operate key aspects of the facility could be dangerous, creating confusion and increasing the risk of an accident. Workers at the facility handle large amounts of hazardous and radioactive material on a regular basis and a small error could create a release that would put thousands of people at risk.

Locked out workers will be in Pittsburgh on December 5^th! Come out to meet some of these workers and show your support!
