Thursday, April 18:

Meeting with Congressman Tim Murphy’s aid, Brad Grantz – Besides being rude and not even letting us sit in his office, Murphy’s aid, Brad Grantz brings up the same stuff his office always does, that the Congressman has a bill that will crack down on CHINA on trade and how they manipulate their currency. Take Three Minutes to Save a Life

Sign a petition to urge action on silica exposure!

Eighteen years ago, as a single parent struggling to make ends meet, Alan White landed a job at a foundry in Buffalo, New York. The pay was great. He thought he was set. Local 3657 Members tell Tim Murphy: Jobs Not Cuts

Yesterday, working families across the U.S. called on their representatives to reject benefit cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; close tax loopholes for the richest two percent; and cancel sequestration.  Members from 3657 joined union activists from across Pittsburgh, braving the ice, sleet and snow, to take that message to Representative Tim Murphy’s office.  Check out some of the pictures from Ike Gittlen.

Senate Filibuster Reform Outcome

A deal over Senate filibuster reform was reached late Wednesday, January 23, 2013.

Not sure what was being debated?  Check out the information about the Senate reform here.

The changes are modest and not the more deliberative process that we wanted, but without the calls and outreach of our members and allies, we would’ve had complete status quo. As The Hill points out in an article about the deal, this is the biggest change to filibuster rules in decades.

For more details about the votes, click here.

Thank you – to every member who made a call urging their Senator to support filibuster reform.  every call makes a difference.

PAC Drive Update

Aside

Local 3657 recently held a PAC contribution drive based on a list of members not contributing already. Of those approached to join 43% are now contributing to PAC. This leaves only 9 members that are not contributing. I will continue to press those individuals annually, should they change their mind as we all know how important the political function of our union is. The forms have been turned in to accounting and contributions will begin coming out in December.

Get Out The Vote This Weekend!

This Saturday and Sunday please come out and join our USW sisters and brothers to get out the vote for candidates that will stand for working people.  We’ll be walking door to door in the Pittsburgh area distributing door hangers and talking to voters about the issues that matter to them.

Join us at 5 Gateway Center on Saturday from 10-2 and Sunday from 10-3 to help us get out the vote.

There will be a whole lot of activity going around the building and several different efforts being dispached out of our offices.  We encourage you to join USW members for a Steelworkers block walk by coming up to the Hot Idle ‘War Room’ on the second floor to get your packet to make sure you’re part of the Steelworkers’ get out the vote effort!  If it’s more convenient you can also pick up your packets on Friday so you can get straight out to the doors on Saturday or Sunday morning.
